Creating a Family Vision Plan: Step-by-Step Guide to Achieving Long-Term Goals

Estimated reading time: 10 minutes

Introduction to Creating a Family Vision Plan

I love processes. My favorite business management system is called EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System). This system allows a business to set goals, track metrics, and increase efficiency and profitability. What more could you ask for? Maybe a management system for your family vision?

Amazingly enough, they’ve also released a Family Vision EOS!

This family vision plan gets into the specifics of how we are using this framework every week, month, quarter, and year. Since one of our core values as a family is authenticity, I want to provide the exact Family Planning framework that our family is using to pursue our dream of owning and operating the Rugged Face Ranch where people gather to seek adventure and pursue their dreams.

What Does Family EOS Look Like?

Creating a family vision plan starts with a structured approach. As I’ve learned through copious attempts at setting goals personally, goals are only achieved when written down in measurable and bite-sized increments.

If you want to lose 50 pounds, you can’t view the 50 pound marker day in and day out. If you do that, you will see how far you have to go and quit. Rather, you should ask yourself what needs to be done this quarter, this week and today so that you see what you are attempting is manageable and achievable.

Here’s how you can integrate the EOS model into your family’s vision.

1. Start with Core Values

Core values are the foundation of creating a family vision plan. What are the 5-7 things that your family values the most? These values will guide your decisions and actions as a family, ensuring that everyone is aligned and working towards the same purpose.

Our family’s core values are:

  • Freedom: Choosing to live from freedom rather than for freedom in the way God has called us.
  • Adventure: Embracing the adventures of the Holy Spirit and the earth at the same time.
  • Authenticity: Showing our true selves to everyone we encounter without putting on masks.
  • Community: Living in deep relationship with other people.
  • Excavation: Allowing God to break us down so He can build us up.
  • Experience: Living life for the experience, not worthless treasures.

To help your family identify core values, try holding a family meeting where each member shares what they believe are the most important values. Write them down and look for common themes. This process can be both enlightening and unifying.

2. Identify Your Passions

What inspires and ignites a fire within your family? Understanding what makes your family come alive is crucial for creating a family vision plan. These passions will motivate you to strive towards your goals with enthusiasm and commitment.

Our family’s core focus includes:

  • Passions: A deep community choosing risk and adventure. Businesses that provide income and opportunities. Adventures that nourish the body, mind, heart, soul, and spirit. Ministry that leads people to pursue God.
  • Our Niche: Families choosing risk and adventure over the normal and the mundane, choosing to create their own family vision.

To identify your family’s passions, consider what activities bring you the most joy and fulfillment. Discuss past experiences that have been particularly memorable or impactful and look for patterns. This will help clarify what truly drives and excites your family.

3. Define Your 10-Year Target

A key element of creating a family vision plan is having a long-term vision. What is that big, hairy, audacious goal that your family is working towards? This 10-year target gives you a clear direction and something substantial to strive for.

Our target is to own Rugged Face Ranch and have 10,000 people in the Rugged Face community.

When defining your 10-year target, think about where you want to be as a family in a decade. What major achievements do you want to accomplish? Be bold and ambitious, but also ensure the goals are meaningful to everyone in the family.

4. Create a Lifetime Wish List

What are the things your family wants to accomplish over the next 10 years? This wish list encompasses your ultimate family vision. Creating a family vision plan involves dreaming big and identifying the milestones you want to achieve together.

Our family’s lifetime wish list includes:

  • Own an income-producing Colorado mountain property
  • Own 10 income-producing businesses
  • Visit all 50 states with kids
  • Hold great-grandkids
  • Celebrate 60th anniversary
  • Own a horse farm
  • Have friends/acquaintances in all 50 states
  • Give away $1,000,000
  • Build Rugged Face Ranch
  • Lead 100,000 people to adventure through the Rugged Face

Now, many of these items listed above are subjective based on what our family desires. These are simply desires that we have as a family.

Encourage each family member to contribute to the lifetime wish list. This not only makes the process more inclusive but also ensures that everyone’s dreams and aspirations are considered. It can be a fun and inspiring activity that brings everyone closer together.

5. Develop a 3-Year Picture

To bring your 10-year target closer to reality, you need a 3-year picture. What needs to happen over the next 3 years to move closer to your 10-year target? This step in creating a family vision plan helps break down your long-term vision into more manageable and actionable steps.

Our 3-year picture includes:

  • Achieving a specific annual income
  • Establishing 7 total income streams
  • Growing the Rugged Face community to 1,000 people
  • Saving $100,000 towards Rugged Face Ranch
  • Building 50 connections in the ministry property community

Creating a 3-year picture involves setting intermediate goals that are challenging yet achievable. It’s about finding a balance between ambition and realism. Regularly revisiting and adjusting these goals as needed will help keep the family on track.

6. Outline Your 1-Year Plan

Your 1-year plan is a crucial part of creating a family vision plan. What needs to happen over the next 12 months to achieve your 3-year picture? Setting annual goals ensures that you are making consistent progress towards your bigger vision.

Our 1-year plan includes:

  • Increasing professional income to X
  • Generating X in side income
  • Publishing 100 blog posts
  • Establishing 5 total income streams
  • Generating $1,000 per month through our blog

A detailed 1-year plan breaks down the 3-year picture into specific, actionable steps. Each family member can take on roles and responsibilities that align with their strengths and interests, fostering a sense of ownership and commitment.

7. Set Your Quarterly Rocks

Quarterly rocks are essentially your quarterly goals. What do you need to accomplish over the next 90 days to achieve your 1-year plan? Creating a family vision plan involves breaking down your yearly goals into smaller, more achievable chunks.

Our quarterly rocks for 10/01/2023 include:

  • Generating a specific income
  • Increasing investments to X
  • Creating our first dollar through our blog
  • Eliminating one business to free capacity for the blog
  • Writing 20 blog posts
  • Hosting 3 Curated Conversation Dinners
  • Meeting 3 new families to grow with

Setting quarterly rocks allows the family to focus on short-term goals that build towards the larger vision. Regular check-ins and progress reviews help keep everyone motivated and accountable.

8. Address Your Issues

Every family faces challenges and obstacles. Identifying these issues is a critical part of creating a family vision plan. What are the things you must solve to attain your quarterly rocks? Tackling these issues head-on ensures that nothing stands in the way of your progress.

Our family’s current issues include:

  • Not being settled into a community
  • Decisions about housing and schooling
  • Not enough time or priority for content creation
  • Time spent on unimportant things
  • Lack of time or priority to discuss and plan for the future

Addressing issues promptly and effectively is key to maintaining momentum. Create a safe space where family members can openly discuss problems and work together to find solutions.

Implementing Family Goal Setting for a Purposeful Life

Now that you have a clear framework, let’s talk about implementation. Consistent review and adaptation are essential for successful family goal setting. Here’s how you can stay on track:

  • Weekly Family Meetings: Schedule regular meetings to review progress, address issues, and celebrate wins. This keeps everyone engaged and accountable.
  • Visual Reminders: Create visual boards or charts that display your family’s core values, passions, and goals. Place these in a common area where everyone can see them daily.
  • Regular Reviews: Periodically review your 3-year picture, 1-year plan, and quarterly rocks to ensure they are still aligned with your family’s vision and adjust as necessary.

How This Vision Plan Has Shaped Our Family

It’s quite remarkable how putting pen to paper has truly given our family a breath of fresh air in pursuit of our dreams. What we’ve discovered is that the rocks we have set take consistent effort in order to accomplish. We don’t always accomplish each and every rock, but we make significant progress towards each one.

This has led us to making difficult decisions to pursue our family rocks rather than pursue fleeting desires. Almost everything we do as a family points back to something mentioned above. The conversations we have, the purchases we make and the daily habits we create are subject to our 10 year vision.
