Introduction to Pursuing Dreams While Raising A Family

Balancing the pursuit of personal dreams with the responsibilities of raising a family is a delicate dance that requires careful planning, unwavering determination, and a robust support system. It’s a journey filled with highs and lows, challenges and triumphs. This guide aims to provide families with actionable insights and inspiration to chase their dreams without compromising on family time and responsibilities. We’ll delve into four main points: setting personal goals, managing time effectively, leveraging support systems, and embracing change.

It’s the same old story we hear all the time. I had big plans for life. I wanted to pursue a dream! but then I got married. Next up? Kids. Then we had another. Work became very busy. The kids started playing sports and other activities. Oops, I got busier at work. Finally, our kids graduated. Then I got even busier at work. Then I retired. Now, we can experience adventure.

The Normal Way of Doing Things

That’s the normal way of doing things. Unfortunately, that’s a dying way. If you want to see the ultimate guide to destroying normal, check here. Dreams must be pursued!

We never get to fulfill our dreams because life gets in the way. What if there was another way though? What if we chose to pursue adventure BECAUSE of life’s circumstances rather than in spite of them?

As parents, spouses, executives, business owners, and anything else we’ve chosen to make part of our stories, we have the greatest opportunity for adventure. We believe that being single, without any responsibility, is the only way to truly pursue our dreams. That is a false belief and one that should never cross our minds again.

Choose To Pursue Your Dreams

The truth is that we now have an army to pursue our dreams with. We have a loving spouse who wants to pursue dreams with us. Our kids want to be involved in every aspect of our lives. We have a community that desires to learn how to dream again.

We get to be the catalyst for dream-chasing. Yes, finances are tighter when you have a family. Time is more constrained when we have a family. Dreams may look different when we have a family. All of these things are true.

The good thing though is that dreams don’t ever die. We always have ambitions for the future life we desire. The only thing stopping us from pursuing them is the belief that we can’t. That’s a choice, it’s not a mandate.

What is it that you truly want to do with your life? What dream do you want to pursue? With your family? Write them down, concoct a plan, and execute. It really comes down to a choice

Pursuing Dreams

1. Setting Personal Goals: Defining Your Own Path

Setting personal goals is the cornerstone of achieving your dreams. Whether it’s pursuing a new career path, starting a side hustle, or fulfilling a long-held ambition, having clear goals provides direction and motivation.

Identify Your Dreams and Goals

Start by identifying your earliest aspirations and dreams. Reflect on what you wanted to achieve as a young girl or boy. For some, this might be becoming a professional writer, like Katherine Goldstein, a freelance reporter who pursued her passion despite a busy schedule. For others, it could be starting a business or obtaining a master’s degree.

Break Down Big Goals

Divide your big dreams into smaller, manageable tasks. For example, if your goal is to become a professional writer, begin by setting aside time each day to write. This could be during early mornings or late evenings when the household responsibility is minimal. Breaking down your goals makes them less daunting and more achievable.

Involve Family Members

Involve your family members in your goal-setting process. This not only provides support but also helps them understand your aspirations. For example, Peloton’s vice president Robin Arzón balances her high expectations and professional life by involving her family, including her daughter Athena Amelia Arzón-Butler, in her fitness programming.

Adapt to Changing Dreams

Dreams often evolve over time. Embrace this change and be flexible. For instance, your dreams in high school might differ from your current ambitions. Acknowledge these changes and adjust your goals accordingly.

2. Managing Time Effectively: Balancing Family and Personal Aspirations

Time management is crucial when balancing family life and personal goals. It’s about making the most of the precious time you have and finding creative ways to integrate your ambitions into your daily routine.

Create a Schedule

Develop a daily or weekly schedule that allocates specific time slots for your personal goals. Early mornings or late evenings can be a good time for quiet work on your dreams. For instance, if you’re an eighth-grade teacher like Miss Coyne, you might find early mornings the best time to focus on your own career aspirations.

Utilize Little Quiet Moments

Take advantage of little quiet moments throughout the day. These could be during your kids’ play dates or nap times. For example, a single mom can use these moments to work on a side hustle or further her education.

Set Priorities

Determine what tasks are most important and focus on those first. This helps in managing the mental load and ensures that the most critical tasks are completed. For instance, Eve Rodsky, author of “Fair Play,” emphasizes the importance of setting priorities to manage household responsibilities and personal goals.

Manage High Expectations and Mom/Dad Guilt

Many parents, especially moms, experience high expectations and mom guilt. It’s essential to acknowledge these feelings and find a balance. Remember, pursuing your dreams sets a positive example for your children.

3. Leveraging Support Systems: Building a Network

Support systems are vital in helping you pursue your dreams while managing family responsibilities. This can include informal networks of support, such as friends, family, and community resources.

Build a Support Network

Connect with other parents, friends, and community members who can offer help and encouragement. This network can provide child care, emotional support, and practical advice. For example, if you’re pursuing a master’s degree, having a reliable support system can be a huge help.

Seek Professional Help

Sometimes, professional assistance like hiring a coach or joining a support group can be invaluable. For instance, if you’re aiming for a big goal like starting a business, professional guidance can provide the direction and support needed.

Utilize Online Communities

Social media and online forums can provide a safe space to share experiences, seek advice, and find inspiration from others in similar situations. Platforms like these can offer practical tips and moral support.

Leverage Flexible Work Options

Consider flexible work options like part-time jobs or freelance work. Many employers now offer flexible schedules that can accommodate family responsibilities. For instance, freelance reporters often have the flexibility to balance work and family life.

4. Embracing Change: Adapting to New Dreams and Realities

Dreams can evolve over time, especially as you navigate different stages of family life. Embracing change and being flexible is essential to continually pursue your aspirations.

Adapt to New Circumstances

Be open to adjusting your goals as your family dynamics change. For example, if you initially aimed for a full-time career change, consider starting part-time or freelancing as a transition. Robin ArzĂłn, for instance, adapted her career to include her passion for fitness and family life.

Celebrate Small Wins

Recognize and celebrate the small achievements along the way. This keeps you motivated and acknowledges the progress you’re making. For example, if you’ve always wanted to write romance novels, completing your first chapter is a significant milestone worth celebrating.

Inspire Your Family

Use your journey to inspire your children and spouse. Show them that hard work, dedication, and a positive mindset can help achieve personal goals, regardless of life’s challenges. This can be particularly impactful for young kids who are observing and learning from your actions.

Find Joy in Everyday Moments

Sometimes, it’s the little dreams and quiet moments that bring the most joy. Whether it’s a favorite pastime with your kids or a special moment in the living room, cherish these times and let them fuel your passion for your bigger dreams.
