Introduction to Making Unforgettable Memories With Family

“I don’t want to look back and realize

that everything that really mattered

was right in front of me the whole time.

Open up my eyes Lord.

Keep me in the moment just like this.

Before the beautiful things we love

become the beautiful things we miss.”

Matthew West – The Beautiful Things We Miss

Yikes. If that doesn’t resonate in some capacity with you, your pulse may not be working. I heard this song for the first time a few nights ago. Ironically, I was daddying solo with our four kids while Celeste was at an event. When this moment passed through the Spotify ethers into our outdoor speaker, I just happened to be rocking our 4 month old while watching our 3 older kids run around the backyard in their swimsuits at 8:45p playing in the water hose. The beautiful things I love. The beautiful things I will miss.

At the end of this post, I have provided a list of 30 ways to make unforgettable memories with your family. You can go ahead and download the printable here as well!

Precious Moments Become Precious Memories

I’m not yet positive if I will get through this post without tearing up. Having young children just does something to your heart all the time. As a father of 4, they are always on my mind. And my nerves more than I would like if we’re being on honest.

It’s summer time. They don’t go to bed early. They wake up late. Further, they may have sugar before breakfast. Or they may not brush their teeth when they wake up. Our whole family sort of enters a new domain when summer time hits. However, at the end of summer, we look back and ponder whether or not we really crushed summer or if we let life get in the way of making memories.

Don’t Let The Season Win

This summer, we’ve won. This is a summer we will remember for the rest of lives. Not because of the travels or the sporting events or the fun we had. We’ll remember this summer because it was the the first summer we’ve had as a complete family of 6. We’ll remember our time in Durango, CO because of the “bear spray incident”. Moreover, we’ll remember nights in the front yard with our neighbors. Further, we’ll remember the emotions, feelings and shifts in each of our kids as they’ve gotten a year older.

We’ve had a lot of time with each other this summer. One thing we’ll never have to regret is quality time. In this post, I want to attempt to pierce your heart just a little bit. I want invite you into a new place within your soul that truly cherishes those unique family traditions. I want to allow you to explore that there may be a better way than working all day, watching Netflix all night and drinking on the weekends. My goal is to encourage you to turn good memories in a memorable experience that you’ll remember forever.

The Importance of Family Time

Family time is a big deal. Anyone remember what Joe Biden said about the Affordable Care Act? Yeah, it’s THAT big. It’s not just about spending time together; it’s about creating special moments that will be cherished for years to come. One of the best ways to do this is by establishing family rituals and traditions. These can be as simple as a family game night every Friday, where we gather around the kitchen table to play classic games and card games. These evenings are filled with laughter, competition, and a lot of fun, providing an easy way to bond as a family.

Right now, our 6 year old is enthralled by Monopoly. This is a very odd situation for me. I know how to win the game every time.

Pro Tip: It’s no secret that when you own all 4 railroads, the light blues and the oranges, you’re virtually guaranteed to win.

So, when we’re playing the classic game that happens to be my favorite, I have a choice. I can smoke him every time, or I can teach him how to play the game so that we can continue to play long into the future. This is a moment that will eventually become a memory for us. One day, we won’t get to play Monopoly any more. We will both remember this tradition forever.

Travel For The Memories. Embrace the Moments.

Another wonderful way to spend quality time is by organizing family vacations. These trips don’t have to be extravagant or far away. Sometimes, a family adventure to a nearby beach, building sand castles, and watching amazing sunsets can be just as memorable as a trip to a theme park. It’s the shared experiences and the joy of discovering new places together that create positive childhood memories.

In late June of this year, we had the opportunity to venture north to the mountains of Colorado when we visited Durnago for a week. While the trip was filled with rest and relaxation, we created an opportunity to experience life to the fullest by embarking on a white water rafting trip down the lower Animas River. It was our two older kids (8 and 6) first foray into the world of true adventure on the water.

This picture sums up the experience. At first, our kids were hesitant. As the journey went on, they became more and more comfortable with the thought of being on a raft in the middle of the river. As the rapids approached, their apprehension heightened. Then, it was over. They had overcome their fears. Shouts of “that was so much fun” echoed through the canyon. This was a moment that quickly became a memory.

Creating Unforgettable Memories

Making unforgettable memories with your family does not have to be complicated. I’ve come to learn that the simple things in life can be just as a memorable. While outdoor adventures certainly capture the essence of creating memories, it’s those times that we take for granted that are the ones we will look back on with regret or joy.

Timeless memories we will forever remember stem from experiences like Friday nights when our kids get to choose whose bed they sleep in. Rocking our baby in her chair prior to bedtime. Joyous moments like watching our 8 year score her first points in her basketball career. The emotional connection of a heartfelt conversation about the emotions of a 6 year old.

These are the unforgettable memories that we are going to be glad we didn’t miss in the moment.

The Power of New Experiences

Introducing new activities into our family life has also been a fantastic way to create lasting memories. Whether it’s trying out a new cooking method together for a special meal or exploring a theme park together, these experiences add richness to our family memories. A family bike ride to a local ice cream parlor can turn into a great memory, especially when it’s followed by enjoying a delicious treat together.

One of the easiest ways to create special moments is by embracing the little things. Sometimes, it’s not about grand gestures but about the simple ideas that make a significant impact. A great way to create new experiences is to simply ask your kids what they want to do. More often than not, they come up with a creative way to entertain themselves while you join in.

One of our favorite things to do as a family is to provide new experiences that our kids have never enjoyed before. In July, we took our kids out on a pontoon boat for the first time. Again, apprehensive at first, they quickly flourished once their fears were allayed. Not only was this a fun way to get outside during the hot summer months, but it proved to our kids that they are stronger than they believe themselves to be.

Building Strong Families Through Traditions

Family traditions play a crucial role in building strong families. These rituals provide a sense of stability and continuity, creating a framework for family life that children can depend on. Whether it’s holiday traditions, like decorating the Christmas tree together or making a special meal for Thanksgiving, these activities help instill family values and create a sense of unity.

For our family, we particularly enjoy our little tradition of making the night before school exceedingly special. We may visit one of the local restaurants to discuss the upcoming school year and what they are most excited about. Or, we may spend an afternoon shopping for their “first day outfit”. Other times, we’ve enjoyed simply sharing a fire while eating s’mores and discussing the adventures of the summer.

Family traditions are an excellent way to create more of your family’s history that don’t revolve around significant events that are expensive and cumbersome.

Encouraging a Life of Adventure

As parents, it’s essential to encourage our children to embrace new experiences and adventures. By doing so, we help them develop a love for exploration and discovery that will stay with them throughout their lives. A family adventure, whether it’s a simple hike in the woods or a summer vacation exploring a new city, provides an opportunity for children to learn and grow while creating positive memories.

Our kids can’t help but lend themselves to the idea of adventure. It’s in our blood. However, adventure is not just about the places we go and the things we see. Adventure lies in our ability to hear the Holy Spirit’s call on our lives. Yes, this may include travel and outdoor adventure, but more often than not, it involves making tough decisions or having conversations that are important in the moment.

We do our best to teach our kids the value of living each day with an adventure mindset. It doesn’t take the perfect place or setting to find adventure. It just takes a decision to live open-handed and understand that adventure is more of a mindset than an activity.

Hope for the Future

While it’s important to cherish and create memories today, it’s also essential to look forward to the future with hope and anticipation. As our children grow older, the memories we create now will serve as a foundation for their future. They will carry these experiences with them, shaping their values and beliefs and helping them to build strong families of their own.

By making a conscious effort to create special moments and lasting memories, we are investing in the future of our families and theirs several years (if not decades) from now. These experiences provide a sense of belonging, create a legacy of love, and help to build strong, resilient families. In a fast-paced world, taking the time to slow down and cherish the little things is one of the most important things we can do for our children and ourselves.

Conclusion to Making Unforgettable Memories with Family

In conclusion, making memories today is crucial because before we know it, our kids will be older, and we will be too. By prioritizing family time, creating new traditions, and embracing new experiences, we can build a lifetime of unforgettable memories that will be cherished for generations to come. So, let’s take the time to create special moments, capture the joy of the present, and look forward to a future filled with hope and love.
