Psalm 121:8: “The Lord will watch over your coming and going…”
Isn’t it so true that we often find ourselves rushed, hurried and late for pretty much any trip or adventure? I have no clue why that is, but it seems to always happen! Now, most of the time everything works out just fine. We end up getting to our destination just in time and have a great time.
But what about those times when things do not go quite as we expected? You know what I’m talking about. Those times where we miss our flight. Or we can’t find an Uber to take us to our hotel. Or, better yet, we forget our passport or phone in the car after we’ve waited in line 30 minutes to check our luggage.
Proverbs 16:9: “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
It is in these moments that our faith is tested!
Now, moments like these fall on the “not so important” part of the spectrum in terms of life’s problems. Let’s be real.
However, they can truly send us into a spiral if we’re not prepared. Ironically, most of the time it is our lack of preparation that leads us to into situations like the aforementioned.
Matthew 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Think about a time when things just were not going your way. Maybe you were sprinting through an airport trying to catch your last flight of a multi-leg trip. Or, maybe you were stuck in traffic on the interstate of an unknown city without access to an maps because your phone died.
When these times occur, do you ever think that God cares? I never do! God must have bigger fish to fry than my little problem of trying to find an exit so I can get to my hotel.
Well, I’ve got some good news. God cares just as much about safe travel as he does the poor and the powerless of our world.
Psalm 91:4: “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
Let’s take this a bit deeper. Having a vacation turn sour due to our lack of preparation certainly is not on par with other occurrences throughout the world like poverty, war and famine. What this does reveal though is a lack of understanding the bigger picture in situations like this?
Imagine some of the examples I’ve laid out above. How would you handle these situations? Would you act frantically? How kinds of words would you use to try and get your trip back on track?
How you handle situations where things are not quite going your way will inform the areas of life that need redemption.
Practical Idea
Plan a “wing-it weekend” where you only decide on your destination at the last minute, just to keep things adventurous! Don’t worry about the extra cost!

Proverbs 3:6: “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
The verses above is one of those that I often forget isn’t simply referring to a straight line. Making ones paths straight is not taking all of the curves, detours and exits and turning them into straight lines.
No, it stating that despite all of the twists and turns you will know where to go regardless.
When we’re traveling, we often have copious opportunities to exit the interstate or take a turn into an unknown land. We don’t freak out though when this occurs. Why? Because we have access to a simple app on our phone called “Google Maps” or “Waze” that tells us exactly where to go.
That’s what happens with God when we encounter times in our lives that we’re not positive which direction to go. The good news is that God doesn’t require cell service or battery life to work.
Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
God might make your paths straight, but you can still take the scenic route. Perfect for the “unofficial detour enthusiast.”
I love the idea that we have freedom in Christ to go where we please and do what we want.
In 2018, my dad and I took a father/son trip to Washington DC for a few days. We hadn’t gotten to get out of town together for a few years. So, when we had the opportunity, we chose the one city in America that both of us knew would provide ample opportunity for learning – Washington DC.
As we sauntered the streets taking in the sites, smells, and civilian protests, we found ourselves wandering into places unknown. While most tourists preferred the Washington Monument, Smithsonian Institute museums and the White House, my dad and I were more intrigued by the IRS, SEC and State Department buildings.
I couldn’t take my eyes of the stairs of the capitol, hoping to spot a Congressman or Senator. Our path was very different from most people that tour Washington D.C. Fortunately, we had a map to get us anywhere in the city at any time.
Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
This is kind of how God works. The great Augustine once famously said, “Love God and do as you please.”
God is for us. He is not for micro-managing our lives. We have the freedom to choose. He has granted us the ability to make turns, take detours, and adventure a little bit. We also have the knowledge of knowing that He will make our paths straight when we submit out plans to Him.

Practical Idea
Try a “no-map day” where you let locals give you directions—or just let the path unfold.
Hebrews 11:8: “By faith Abraham…went out, not knowing where he was going.”
Have you ever gotten lost somewhere? The answer is yes. Come on now. Getting lost is one of the most frustrating things that can happen to us. But why is it so frustrating? Simple. We have an expectation of how things are going to go and where we’re going to be. Getting lost ruins our expectations.
The beauty of getting lost, however, is that we get to experience a new way of getting to our destination. The adventures that come through “getting lost” can be invaluable.
I think back to our RV trip we took as a family in 2021. We got lost on our way to Badlands National Park. Let’s just say that when you get lost near the Badlands, you quite literally are on your own. We didn’t see anything car for almost an hour as we meandered through backroads trying to find a gas station.Â
When we finally reached out destination, we had seen more of Badlands than most people could ever think. It turned out to be a true adventure!
Exodus 13:21: “By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.”
How often do we take situations like Abraham went through and truly just exist in the moment? Far too often, we know exactly where we’re going, how long it’s going to take to get there and the precise route to take.
Part of the fun is understanding that life’s journeys, similar to our travel adventures, is in the unknown and sometimes unknowable. Traveling should be exciting and adventurous. Simply taking the beaten path where everyone else has gone before can be fine. It often is pretty boring though.Â

Psalm 139:9-10: “If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”
The encouragement to take from this verse is to simply exist in the moment of the unknown. Take one step, then take the next. Embrace the unknown! This verse is for anyone who’s ever thought, “I’ll figure it out when I get there.” Spoiler alert: half the fun is not having all the answers.
Have you ever gone on a trip where you didn’t really know what was ahead of your or what you were going to encounter? I think of an African safari where you just hope to catch a glimpse of a lion, an elephant or a gorilla.
Then, all of a sudden, you stumble upon a pride of lions sleeping under the shade of a tree. It’s a truly magical experience (I imagine).
Embrace the discomfort that comes from not knowing where you’re going or even what you’re going to do. Spontaneity is part of the experience.
Practical Idea
Pick a random city landmark and see what hidden gems you find along the way. Bonus: no tourist traps allowed.
Numbers 13:1-2: “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Send men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites.'”
How often do we meticulously plan every detail of a trip, only to watch those plans unravel? A delayed flight, a lost reservation, or even a surprise detour can leave us feeling disoriented and frustrated. Yet, this verse reminds us that God’s plans are far greater than anything we could design ourselves.
When we surrender to His guidance, even the unexpected can become an opportunity for growth and adventure.
Life and travel are full of twists and turns, but God knows the final destination. Trusting His plan allows us to step forward with confidence—even when the road ahead looks different than we imagined.
Psalm 23:3: “He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
This verse is for those of us who live in the fine balance between meticulous planners and spontaneous wanderers. We’ve all had moments where our travel itinerary falls apart—whether it’s a flight delay, a closed restaurant, or an unexpected rainstorm.
Yet, there’s a strange comfort in knowing that while our plans might falter, God’s never do.
When things go sideways, trust that God’s plans might just involve a better route than the one we had in mind.
It’s a reminder to surrender control and let Him guide the way—even if it feels like we’re wandering into the unknown.

Practical Idea
Plan a “day of surprises” where each meal, activity, or direction is chosen randomly—draw from a hat, roll a dice, or let a friend decide for you. See where the day takes you!
Psalm 23:4: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Ever find yourself in an unnerving situation while traveling? Maybe a late-night arrival in an unfamiliar place or an unexpected thunderstorm during a hike? These moments test our courage and resourcefulness, but they also invite us to remember that we’re never truly alone.
Psalm 23:4 offers a profound reassurance: no matter where we are or what challenges we face, God is by our side.
The unknown, while intimidating, is also where faith grows strongest. Whether it’s a literal shadowy valley or just a tough travel day, we can take heart knowing that we are protected and guided every step of the way.
Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
For every time you’ve said, “This seemed like a good idea at the time,” Psalm 23:4 is your go-to verse. From hiking trails that turn into mudslides to Airbnbs that turn out to be glorified garden sheds, unexpected adventures are bound to happen.
This verse reminds us that even in the darkest valleys—or the sketchiest parts of a road trip—we don’t need to fear. God is always present, offering His peace and protection. After all, God’s protection is greater than any protection we can provide!
Practical Idea
Book a stay that’s wildly outside your comfort zone—think a treehouse in the woods, an off-grid yurt, or a tiny cabin with no Wi-Fi. Lean into the adventure and embrace the unexpected!
