Introduction: The Unlikely Queen

In the vast tapestry of biblical history, few stories capture the imagination and inspire the soul like that of Esther. A young Jewish woman in a foreign land, Esther’s journey from an orphaned exile to the queen of Persia is a narrative filled with courage, faith, and divine intervention. The Bible story of Queen Esther is not just a tale of a beautiful young woman who found favor in the eyes of a king; it is a powerful account of a woman who, against all odds, stood in the gap for her people and embraced her “for such a time as this” moment.

Today, Esther’s story in the Old Testament resonates with countless individuals who face their own trials, challenges, and decisions. Her life offers a blueprint for navigating complex situations with grace, wisdom, and faith. But what kind of woman was Esther in the Bible? Let’s explore the characteristics of Esther that made her a woman of remarkable resilience, radiance, respect, resourcefulness, and renown, and how these qualities can inspire us in our own lives.

What Kind of Woman Was Esther In The Bible?

Esther Was Resilient

Esther’s life began in exile, far from the comforts and traditions of her Jewish heritage. She was a young orphan raised by her older cousin Mordecai. She was taken with other young women, and chosen to marry the king of the Persian empire. Then her life was threatened by an evil man named Haman. Yet her resilience shines through in her ability to rise above her circumstances.

Exiled in a Foreign Land

• Esther’s early life in exile made it harder to understand the importance of where she came from. Yet Mordecai must have helped impart to her a deep appreciation for her heritage. And despite being in a foreign land, Esther maintained her Jewish identity, a testament to her inner strength and commitment to her faith (Esther 2:7). 
• Real-Life Application: Consider a time when you felt displaced from comfort, security, or identity in your own life. Like Esther, you may have faced great uncertainty and fear. Yet during these times, your faith grew higher as your roots went deeper into the unshakable foundation of Christ Himself. When all other false comforts were removed, you learned to depend solely on the comfort of the Holy Spirit. When security seems shaky or identity seems unidentifiable, then God alone becomes your fortress and your familiar. Esther drew upon her spiritual resilience and she thrived in exile.

Marriage Without Love

• Unlike many women, Esther did not have the privilege of choosing her husband. While it may have seemed like she just won a beauty contest, it really was more about giving up the life she might have always dreamed about. Her marriage to King Ahasuerus was not based on love but on the king’s choice. Nevertheless, Esther’s character and resilience allowed her to find her place and purpose within the royal palace.
• Practical Application: Esther not only entered into marriage humbly and willingly, but she also seemed to have been able to demonstrate genuine love for her husband despite the way they began. When we know Jesus, we know that His love alone is pure and unselfish. He loved us unconditionally even in our unloveliness. And we can do the same for others when we have first received His love for us. Esther knew she was loved by God, and was able to “choose” as well to extend love to a king she had not known. 

Threatened by Haman

• Esther’s resilience was put to the test when Haman, the son of Hammedatha and an enemy of the Jewish people, plotted to annihilate them. In the face of this grave threat, Esther did not falter but took bold and decisive action to protect God’s people, her people. (Esther 4:16).
• Modern-Day Parallel: It is important to recognize how Esther chose to focus not on her enemy or the fear he caused her. But she chose rather to dwell upon her fellow Jews that were also in grave danger. Many times, it is easy to become consumed by fear of the risks that come with standing up to our enemies. But like Esther, maybe we should focus more on what kind of risks there would be if we did NOT rise to the occasion and who might be affected by our failure to act. Esther’s story serves as a powerful example of how resilience, coupled with strategic action, can lead to great things, even in the face of overwhelming odds. 

Esther Was Radiant

Esther’s radiance was not just in her physical beauty but in the beauty of her character. The Bible highlights Esther’s attractiveness, but it is clear that her inner qualities were what truly set her apart.

Beautiful Inside and Out:

Esther’s beauty is well-documented in the Book of Esther. She was a beautiful woman, and the Bible tells us that Esther caught the eye of the king among all the other beautiful young virgins (Esther 2:17). However, it was her inner beauty, her humility, and her wisdom that endeared her to everyone around her.

• Practical Example: In today’s world, where physical beauty is often emphasized, Esther’s story reminds us that true beauty comes from within. It’s not about outward appearances, but about the qualities that define our character—kindness, humility, wisdom, and faith. Throughout history, the definition of what is really “beautiful” has changed over and over again based on differences of opinion. However, the look of a beautiful heart has always stayed the same. Wouldn’t it just be easier to focus on the unchanging essence of inner beauty, rather than trying constantly to keep up with what the world deems worthy of outward beauty? When you let God have your heart, He makes you beautiful inside and out. 

Knew Who She Was

• Despite the pressures of living in the king’s palace and the royal crown she wore, Esther never forgot her roots. She understood that God had chosen her people as His very own, and she carried herself with a quiet confidence, knowing that her beauty was not just skin deep but a reflection of her godly character. She did not need onlookers to confirm her beauty, and that made her truly beautiful. 
• Real-Life Application: It’s easy to lose oneself in the pursuit of success, fame, or approval. However, Esther’s example teaches us the importance of staying true to who we are, regardless of our circumstances. I assume her lack of need for attention was one of the very things that drew the king’s attention. She recognized that the honor of being chosen by King Xerxes might have been important. Yet it would never compare with the honor of being chosen by the King of Kings. Our sense of “belonging” in Christ should be our most cherished gift and the very thing that makes us radiant.

Esther Was Respectful and Meek

Esther’s respectfulness and meekness were key to her success in the palace. She demonstrated an ability to listen, learn, and act wisely, qualities that earned her favor with both God and man.

Listened to Mordecai’s Instructions

• From a young age, Esther showed great respect for her older cousin Mordecai, who had taken her in as his own daughter. Even after she became queen, she continued to heed Mordecai’s instructions. This decision would ultimately save the Jewish people (Esther 2:20).
• Practical Application: Whether it is a parent or mentor, it is important to honor them with continued respect, even as you mature in life. Esther could have been so enamored with the luxuries and opportunities that came with being queen, that she could have chosen not to listen to Mordecai any longer. Yet she not only respected him, but she accepted his mission as her own. Listening to wise counsel, as Esther did, can open doors to divine opportunities and protect us from potential pitfalls.

Gained Favor in the Harem

• Esther’s respectful demeanor and meekness were evident when she first entered the king’s harem. She could have been indignant that she had been taken without consent. Instead, she pleased the king’s eunuch, Hegai, and won his favor. And she was quickly moved to the best place in the harem. (Esther 2:9) Even after twelve months of beauty preparations, she respected Hegai even more by taking only what he suggested with her to the king.  
• Real-Life Example: This again shows the significance of having “continual” respect for authority. And it proves Esther’s motives were not just to gain approval or to get all the amenities. She simply showed integrity by walking humbly before a God who exalted her. When we show respect only to be noticed or accepted, then we are not seeking the right kind of favor. Esther gained favor with man because she lived for God’s favor alone. 

Gained Favor with the King

• Esther’s respectful nature and meekness also won her the favor of King Xerxes. (Esther 5:2). Perhaps it was not just physical beauty but spiritual meekness that stirred the king’s heart. We do not know for sure, but I believe Esther’s meekness in the Bible allowed the Lord free reign to open the kings eyes and heart to a woman He had chosen to save His people. 
• Practical Application: If you desire to leave an impact, approaching situations with humility and respect can be far more effective than using force or flattery. Meekness instead of manipulation leaves a lasting mark on the world. Esther led well by submitting first to God and then the authorities He put in her life. Her example shows that respect and meekness are not signs of weakness but powerful tools that God can use in our lives for His glory.

Esther Was Resourceful

One of Esther’s most admirable traits was her resourcefulness. She not only made wise decisions, but she took strategic action, ensuring that every move made was well-planned and purposeful.

Asked for Intentional Prayer and Fasting

• When Esther learned of Haman’s plot to destroy the Jewish people, she began to understand the bigger picture about why she might have been given her position as queen. She was scared, but she called for a time of prayer and fasting, asking all her supporters to join her in seeking God’s help before she approached the king (Esther 4:16). She was literally risking her life in order to save many.
• Real-Life Example: In times of fighting or crisis or when faced with big decisions, turning to prayer and seeking God’s guidance can provide clarity and strength. It is a way of handing whatever it is you’re holding over to the only One Who can handle it. You are relinquishing control, asking for the next step, and believing that He will go before you and behind you. Prayer and fasting can allow you to see and declare that God comes first in your life. And it is a way of asking Him to cover your current situation with His mighty hand. 

Planned Two Detailed Banquets

• Esther didn’t immediately reveal Haman’s plot to the king; instead, she invited the king and Haman to two banquets. This strategic delay allowed her to build rapport and gain more favor from the king before making her request (Esther 5:4, 7:1-2). And scripture shows that the night between the two banquets was the time when the king realized that Mordecai had saved his life, and he sought to honor him. We do not know, but perhaps the strategy of her delay in making her request allowed for God to soften the king’s heart toward the Jewish people. 
• Practical Application: Strategic thinking is essential in leadership and problem-solving. Esther’s example teaches us the value of planning and patience. I assume that in Esther’s relief that she had just been spared her life by the king, she could have easily thought it wise to spit out her request as fast as she could and then quit bothering him. That might have been my thinking. Instead she simply honored him before requesting anything from him. She showed him that she valued “him” not just what he could give her. We can do the same by taking the time to patiently prepare and graciously build relationships.

Spoke to the King with Wisdom

• Esther’s wisdom in speaking to the king was evident when she finally revealed Haman’s plot. She did so in a way that appealed to the king’s emotions and sense of justice. (Esther 7:3-6). She gently made her request and did not give one thought to accepting his offer to give her half his kingdom. The Bible shows Esther’s mission was singular: a woman of God trying to save her people. She presented her case with discernment and delicacy. 
• Real-Life Example: When it comes to communication, knowing when and how to present something is crucial for revealing your intentions clearly. Esther’s approach teaches us to be thoughtful in our speech understanding of our audience. I know there have been many times my husband and I have misinterpreted what the other was saying, and an unnecessary argument would ensue. This was not fun. We must learn from Esther’s example, and take the time we need to discover the most proper and polite way to communicate our hearts with each other. 

Esther Was Renowned

Esther’s story did not end with her saving the Jewish people; her legacy continued long after her time. She became a symbol of courage and faith for all women, leaving a lasting impact on history.

Left a Legacy for All Women

• Esther’s actions have inspired countless generations of women to stand up for what is right and to trust in God’s plan, even in the face of grave danger. She never would have known what kind of impact she would make, because she was just choosing to live each day with integrity. She stepped up when needed with grace and tenacity. And the Bible reveals that Esther’s legacy as a woman of courage, faith, and wisdom is celebrated in the Jewish festival of Purim, which commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people through her bravery (Esther 9:26-28).
• Real-Life Application: Even though the book of Esther does not mention God at all, Esther’s life showed the essence of her God in every way. THAT is the kind of legacy I want to leave. Sometimes, we strive to build a fortune of possessions to pass down. Or we achieve great levels of education in order to teach others. Still others find any way they can to build up a talent or gift in order to be memorable to others. Yet, in looking at Esther’s humility and the way she did what was needed, shows me a better way to leave an impact. The only question that matters is “Is my life representing my Savior?” 

Embraced Her “For Such a Time as This” Moment

• One of the most famous verses in the Book of Esther is Mordecai’s challenge to Esther: “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14). Esther embraced this moment, recognizing that God had placed her in the right place at the right time. Her “moment” not only saved her people, but provided a way for Jewish generations to continue until the coming Christ. God would have brought salvation for the Israelites some other way, but he gave Esther a chance to be a part of His amazing plan. And despite the unknowns, she stepped up with certainty and gumption.

Your Moments

• What have been some “step up to the plate” moments for you? Did you strike out? Did you hit a home run? Did you get on base? Or were you too scared to even get in the batter’s box? It’s okay if you were. God knew there would be opportunities we would miss. But He is also a God of second chances, and He still has an amazing plan for your life. He still has a bigger picture, and He wants you to be part of it. He is just asking you to step up. Then He will hold the bat with you and swing at just the right time. It may be scary and intimidating. But it will most certainly be an experience of a lifetime that you would be ashamed to have missed. Once you say “yes” to God, He will take every opportunity to convince you that you made the best decision of your life. That doesn’t mean it will be easy, or that you won’t face fear or failure. But it will always be worth it. God doesn’t need you, but He wants you…all of you. Reflecting on Esther’s story can be a reminder to be ready to seize the opportunities God provides, knowing that you are part of a greater plan than your own.

Conclusion: Esther’s Enduring Influence

This beautiful story is a testament to the power of faith, courage, and humility. Esther was a resilient, radiant, respectful, resourceful, and renowned woman of the Bible who used her identity in Christ in her position to influence and fulfill God’s plan for the Jewish people. The characteristics of Esther are not just admirable but also practical for our own lives today. We can learn from her resilience in the face of adversity, her radiant inner beauty, her respectful demeanor, her resourceful actions, and her renowned legacy.
