36 Best Motivational Quotes for the Working Man

Work is one of those things that we are so excited for when we graduate college. We are finally on our own charting our own unique path to discover that one thing we were destined to do. Our lives our out in front of us, and we think we know everything. Our dreams and ambitions for the adventures the world has to offer could not be more desirable in this phase of life. Then, we start working. More often than not, we don’t get our dream job right out of college.

We labor long hours in a position that likely doesn’t pay well and recognition is few and far between. We become frustrated when we don’t advance as quickly as we think we should. Work becomes mundane. As we grow and progress in our professional lives, we discover new things about ourselves and what work truly means. In this post, I want to provide 36 motivational quotes for working men to both inspire us towards excellence but also present a realistic picture of how our work is designed for us to create adventure and freedom in our lives.

As we look back through recent history of those that paved the way for the lives we live today, we think of men like Henry Ford, Alexander Graham Bell, Richard Branson and Frank Lloyd Wright. These men were true trailblazers for the modern amenities we get to experience today. While we may never achieve the heights of the success of these men, our working lives are no less significant than theirs.

The Working Mindset

One of my favorite books on mindset is simply titled “Mindset”. Written by Clinical Psychologist Carol, Dweck, she addresses the idea that there are two types of mindsets that we all have access to – a Growth Mindset or a Fixed Mindset.

“A growth mindset is how much you believe your basic qualities, like intelligence and talent, can be changed or developed. A fixed mindset is how much you believe your basic qualities are fixed or permanent.” states this article from Central Washington University. What you will see in the following quotes is that each of these people employ a Growth Mindset. They believe that all skills and learning can and should be developed over time.

Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is like the fertile soil in which seeds of potential sprout and thrive. It’s an attitude that embraces challenges as opportunities for learning and development, rather than obstacles to be avoided. In cultivating a growth mindset, individuals understand that their abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, effort, and perseverance. This mindset fosters resilience in the face of setbacks, encouraging individuals to view failure not as a reflection of their innate capabilities, but as a stepping stone toward improvement and mastery. With a growth mindset, people are empowered to take risks, explore new possibilities, and push beyond their comfort zones, unlocking their full potential along the way.

In contrast to a fixed mindset, which sees talents and abilities as static traits, a growth mindset recognizes the potential for continual growth and improvement. It encourages a shift from a focus on innate talent or intelligence to a focus on the process of learning and development. Embracing a growth mindset opens doors to greater creativity, innovation, and achievement, as individuals approach challenges with a sense of curiosity and a willingness to experiment and learn from their experiences. Ultimately, a growth mindset not only shapes individual success but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement and resilience in communities and organizations, driving progress and innovation forward.

9 Inspirational Quotes About Mindset

1. “A man is not idle because he is absorbed in thought. There is a visible labor and there is an invisible labor.” – Victor Hugo

2. “Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment. Full effort is full victory.” – Mahatma Gandhi

3. “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” – Pele

4. “Nothing will work unless you do.” – Maya Angelou

5. “The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive and passion, it’s possible to achieve the American dream.” – Tommy Hilfiger

6. “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” – Steve Jobs

7. “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” – Albert Schweitzer

8. “The only way to achieve the impossible is to believe it is possible.” – Charles Kingsleigh (Alice in Wonderland)

9. “The only thing standing between you and your goal is the story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.” – Jordan Belfort

Practical Application

In my opinion, the best way to achieve a growth mindset is to study people with growth mindsets. When we read about Walt Disney and the creation of the Disney company, we see that he had a view of the world that literally no one had ever had during his time. He believed that things not yet seen were possible. The same is true about Michael Phelps.

In 2008, Michael Phelps attempted the impossible. If you’re not familiar with Phelps, his story is one for the history books. When the summer olympic games approached in 2008, Michael Phelps made known his goal was to win eight gold medals in various swimming events. This had never been done before. Not only that, no one had ever gotten close to accomplishing this feat. His mindset pushed the boundaries of what was possible in swimming. Utilizing the idea that the human body was capable of far more than had ever been done, he got to work.

Hours upon hours every day for years allowed Phelps to qualify for every event he attempted prior to the games starting in the summer of 2008. As the games approached in late summer, Phelps had set his sights on 8 olympic gold medals. Winning a medal of any color at the olympics puts one in elite athletic status. However, winning 8 gold medals would set him a part as the only human to have done so. His mindset paid off. He won 8 Gold medals at the olympics that year. Had Phelps utilized a fixed mindset during this time, he would not have achieved this feat. He may not have even qualified in the first place.

Consistent Hard Work & Work Ethic

Success regularly takes lots of hard work. The result of hard work may not lead to success either. That is why it is so important to develop a work ethic. Albert Einstein’s work ethic was marked by a profound dedication to the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. Renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to theoretical physics, Einstein’s work ethic was characterized by an insatiable curiosity and an unwavering commitment to unraveling the mysteries of the universe. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout his life, including financial struggles and academic setbacks, Einstein remained undeterred in his pursuit of scientific truth. His relentless determination propelled him to delve deeper into complex scientific concepts, often immersing himself in solitary contemplation for hours on end as he grappled with the intricacies of theoretical physics.

Moreover, Einstein’s work ethic extended beyond the confines of his academic pursuits. He approached every endeavor with a sense of diligence and precision, whether he was conducting research, teaching, or advocating for social causes. Einstein’s commitment to intellectual honesty and integrity served as a guiding principle throughout his life, inspiring generations of scientists and scholars to approach their work with the same level of rigor and dedication. His enduring legacy as one of the greatest minds in human history is a testament to the transformative power of a relentless work ethic fueled by passion and curiosity.

6 Best Hard Work Quotes

10. “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” – Tim Notke

11. “The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.” – Vidal Sassoon

12. “The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work.” – Harry Golden

13. “I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.” – Thomas Jefferson

14. “Work hard, be kind, and amazing things will happen.” – Conan O’Brien

15. “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” – Colin Powell

Practical Application

Those of us that will submit to idea that hard work is necessary will do great things. We may not become famous or social media celebrities, but we will begin to see the sum of small efforts compound in our work and our personal lives. Vincent Van Gogh once stated that “great results are the effects of doing a lot of small things over a long period of time”. Endurance and discipline are the cornerstones of hard work. Successful people relish in the idea of hard work.

I recently wrote a post about my experience in the last Spartan race I competed in. In fact, I love competition. I discovered though that the results I desired to achieve were not possible without hard work over a long time. This meant spending hours upon hours running, strengthening my grip and ensuring my nutrition was in line with my goals. You may be a naturally talented individual, but if you do not couple your God-given strengths with work ethic, you are leaving a lot on the table.

Real Courage

Sometimes our work requires us to take risks in order to see the results we desire. Muhammad Ali took risks in his fights for social justice. Nelson Mandela took risks by allowing himself to be imprisoned for 32 years in his fight for the freedom of South Africans. Risk takes an immense amount of courage.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a fearless advocate for civil rights who willingly faced numerous risks in his pursuit of equality and justice for all. One of the most significant risks he took was his unwavering commitment to nonviolent protest in the face of violent opposition. Despite the pervasive threat of physical harm and the constant presence of danger, King remained steadfast in his belief in the power of peaceful resistance as a means of effecting social change. His leadership during the Montgomery Bus Boycott, for instance, exposed him to intense scrutiny, harassment, and even threats to his life. Nevertheless, King persisted, inspiring thousands to join him in the struggle against racial segregation and discrimination.

Furthermore, King’s bold stance against the Vietnam War exemplified his willingness to confront powerful institutions and challenge the status quo. In speaking out against the war, King risked alienating allies and facing backlash from political leaders and the public alike. Yet, he remained resolute in his conviction that war and violence were fundamentally incompatible with the principles of justice and equality. Despite facing criticism and controversy, King’s moral clarity and courage elevated him to the status of a global icon of peace and justice, leaving an indelible mark on the world’s collective consciousness. King’s willingness to take risks for the sake of justice and equality serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring importance of courage and conviction in the face of adversity.

23. “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Michael Jordan

Practical Application

Our family took the biggest risk of our lives in the summer of 2021. After having worked in the family business for 11 years, we decided God was calling to something different. We spent the first 6 months after I left the business seeking God’s discernment for what was next. Ultimately, we felt the call to move to Colorado. Despite its beauty and numerous adventures, Colorado was a foreign place for us. We only knew 1 person in the entire state. We had no specific reason to go there other than we felt the Lord calling us there. Through trials and tribulations, we encountered the grace of God on a daily basis.

While the story is still being written, one thing I can tell you for sure is that God will not give you anything you cannot handle through His strength. All it takes is saying yes to the risks he is calling us to. This applies to our working lives as well. Whether that means leaving the comfort and security of your job to launch the business you’ve been thinking about for years or simply asking your boss to allow you to take on that project you’ve had your eye on, courage is required to get where we want to go.

The Extra Mile

This is a very practical step if we are willing to take it. When we choose to go beyond what we were hired to do, we begin to see that our employers will trust us with more responsibility. Going the extra mile in our work lives is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it sets us apart as individuals who are dedicated, reliable, and committed to excellence. By consistently exceeding expectations and delivering results that surpass what is merely required, we demonstrate our value to employers, colleagues, and clients. This not only enhances our professional reputation but also opens doors to new opportunities for advancement and growth. Employers are more likely to recognize and reward employees who consistently go above and beyond, whether through promotions, raises, or increased responsibilities.

Secondly, going the extra mile fosters a culture of excellence and innovation within organizations. When individuals push themselves to deliver exceptional work, it inspires others to do the same. This collective effort to exceed expectations leads to higher levels of productivity, creativity, and overall performance. Moreover, it cultivates a sense of pride and satisfaction among employees, knowing that they are contributing to the success and reputation of their organization. Ultimately, by going the extra mile in our work lives, we not only elevate our own professional standing but also contribute to the success and vitality of the organizations we are a part of.

5 Quotes About Going The Extra Mile

24. “Success isn’t owned. It’s leased, and rent is due every day.” – J.J. Watt

25. “The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.” – Jimmy Johnson

26. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky

27. “Don’t watch the clock; do what it does. Keep going.” – Sam Levenson

28. “Work hard, stay positive, and get up early. It’s the best part of the day.” – George Allen, Sr.

Practical Application

Our realtor in Colorado provided us with an experience we had never seen before. I’ve linked his page here if you are ever in the need for a realtor. He was truly the best for us. When we decided to sell our house and move back to Texas in the spring of 2023, Andrew was my first call. It was a very difficult call because his family had become great friends of ours. In the most professional way possible, he laid out the plan for getting our house sold.

As our house sat on the market longer than we had anticipated, Andrew would routinely set up open houses, continually follow up on leads until he received an answer and even hired a cleaner to have our house professionally cleaned at his expense.

However, the most impressive aspect of this entire journey was that after we had moved, our house still on the market, Andrew would cut the grass every two weeks to ensure the yard looked great. Further, he power washed our driveway. Beyond that, he even paid for a stager to come in and stage the house, again at his own expense. He showed the epitome of going the extra mile. When we sold the house, I was able to tell him that he would be the person we would refer our friends to if they ever needed a realtor.

Leaving Your Comfort Zone

When we leave our comfort zones, this is where the true magic happens. Comfort is one of those things that we often pursue ultimately to find that it leaves us empty. Your comfort zone is where growth stops. The American Dream is filled with comforts we believe we desire. Unfortunately, when we achieve the American Dream, we’re left asking the question, “Is this it?”.

Leaving our comfort zone in pursuit of a dream is essential for personal growth and fulfillment. Staying within the confines of what feels safe and familiar may provide temporary comfort, but it often leads to stagnation and missed opportunities for advancement. When we step outside our comfort zone, we challenge ourselves to confront new experiences, obstacles, and uncertainties. This not only broadens our horizons but also fosters resilience, adaptability, and courage. By embracing discomfort and uncertainty, we develop the skills and mindset necessary to navigate the complexities of pursuing our dreams effectively.

Moreover, leaving our comfort zone is a catalyst for innovation and progress. Breakthroughs rarely occur within the confines of what is known and comfortable. It is through exploration and experimentation that we discover new ideas, perspectives, and solutions. By venturing into uncharted territory, we open ourselves up to a world of possibilities and opportunities for growth. Whether it’s starting a new business, pursuing a creative passion, or embarking on a personal quest for self-discovery, stepping outside our comfort zone allows us to tap into our full potential and unlock new realms of achievement and fulfillment. Ultimately, embracing discomfort in the pursuit of our dreams is not just about reaching our goals; it’s about realizing our true potential and living a life of purpose and significance.

36. “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” Paulo Coelho

Practical Application

I’m reminded of the story of my friend, Jeremiah. Miah, for short, built a business from scratch that became very successful over a decade of hard work and courage. When he decided to move on from this venture to pursue a dream, he knew the level of comfort he had experienced over the years would come to an abrupt end. His new vision would take a lot of money, time and risk. The likelihood of failure would be high. He was entering a world unknown to him in previous line of work. As he set his sights on seeing this vision come to life, he encountered people that did not believe in the vision. His fundraising efforts too twice as long and required twice as much money as he had originally planned.

However, despite all of this, Jeremiah knew that comfort would not be in his future any time soon. He embraced this. Fast forward to this current season, and his dream is unfolding right before his eyes. It’s been a beautiful journey to watch as he as embraced the risk and life outside the comfort zone.

Conclusion

Our working lives give us the ability to create adventure and freedom on a daily basis. When we choose to embrace a growth mindset, develop a work ethic, have courage to take risks, go the extra mile every day and choose discomfort over comfort, our dreams have a much greater chance at becoming reality. I would encourage you to consider each of these areas as you pursue work you love.
