Introduction to Curated Conversation Dinner Party Ideas for Adults
Ever found yourself reminiscing about the good old days of carefree evenings spent with friends, savoring delicious food, and engaging in spirited conversations? I certainly have. There’s something magical about gathering around a beautifully set dinner table, indulging in a multi-course meal, and letting the hours slip by in the company of good friends by asking really thoughtful questions that adults simply don’t get to talk about often. This longing for meaningful connections and memorable experiences inspired me to start hosting 5-course dinner parties at our home.
Earlier this year, we hosted our first first 5-course dinner party that we call Curated Conversations. The thought behind this idea was that too often, adults with young kids do not really ever have time to take for themselves to connect on a deeper level with others in our same life stage. Between shuttling kids back and forth from activities or school and work obligations, we rarely spend time talking to on a deep level other than the rare special occasion.

What is a Curated Conversation Dinner Party for Adults?
Simply put, Curated Conversations is a monthly get-together with 4 other couples centered around the dinner table. For 3 hours, we provide a 5-course dinner coupled with a thoughtful question when each course is delivered. The questions can range from “How was everyone’s week?” to “What are your biggest dreams?”. Each questions is increasingly more thoughtful as the night goes on.
What I love the most is that the couples that have chosen this journey with us answer each question with authenticity and freedom to be themself. We’ve seen great success in asking the deepest of questions like “What is your biggest struggle right now?” Many of the answers are shocking and lead to further inquisition. However, some of the answers provide laughter and memorable stories that we will remember for years to come.
All in all, Curated Conversations is a way for adults to gather around a dinner table with an authentic community to discover freedom and adventure together. It truly is the highlight of every month and is one of the easiest ways to enjoy a delicious meal and through-provoking dialogue.

Creating Curated Conversations
I remember the thrill and slight anxiety of planning the menu, setting the table, and wondering if everything would come together perfectly. Our friends arrived, the non-alcoholic beer flowed, and the laughter and tears never ceased. That evening became one of our most cherished memories, and I realized that creating such moments doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions. With a bit of planning, authenticity and community, you too can host an unforgettable 5-course dinner party that your friends will talk about for years to come.
In this guide, I’ll share with you the steps and tips I’ve learned along the way to help you host your own Curated Conversations dinner party. Whether you’re a seasoned host or trying this for the first time, this guide will provide you with everything you need to create a delightful evening of fine dining and fabulous company. So, let’s dive in and start planning an evening that promises to be full of delicious food, wonderful conversations, and lasting memories.
Planning Your 5-Course Dinner Party
Determining Who Gets Invited In To the Community
This can be one of the most difficult aspects of the entire planning process. If you are as extraverted as we are, you probably have a lot of really good friends that you would love to spend time with every month. Unfortunately, for a dinner like this, you can only invite a handful of those friends. For us, we had identified a couple of families from the onset to invite. For the others, there were just too many to choose. So, we settled on three criteria to make our final invitation list.
- Who has God placed on our hearts?
- Who has similar ambitions/dreams as us?
- Who do we want to get to know better?
So, we prayed about two families the Lord would lay on our heart. When several names kept coming back to us, we discussed who we wanted to grow with and get to know more. We also discussed who had similar dreams and ambitions as us. This finalized the other two families we would invite into this exclusive community.
Picking the Perfect Date
Let’s be honest. There is no such thing as a perfect date when you have kids and busy personal and professional lives. So how do we choose when to host our monthly gathering? Well, it couldn’t be any more simple. You just pick a date that works for YOU! After all, if you’re hosting the event in your own home, providing the food, questions and experience, your community that will gather should adhere to your schedule. Not the other way around.
We determined that a designated 2nd Saturday of each month would be the ideal time for everyone to gather. Providing enough advance notice, this allows for your guests to cater their schedules around the event.

Sending Invites Early
Once the date is set, send out invitations well in advance. Whether you opt for digital invites or beautifully printed cards, ensure that they reflect the theme and formality of the dinner party. This also gives your guests ample time to prepare and RSVP.
We simply texted this out to each family individually more than a month before the initial gathering was to happen. This provided ample time for families to discuss whether or not they wanted to make the commitment. Fortunately, everyone agreed! I requested the RSVP two weeks prior to the first gathering so in the event someone declined, we had enough time to fill their spot with another family.

Crafting Elegant Invitations
Invitations set the tone for your dinner party. They can range from simple and elegant to elaborate and themed, depending on the dinner party ideas you have.
Here you can find the exact invitation that we utilized to create the invitations.
We created this invitation utilizing Canva, which I use almost daily. The pre-designed templates provide beautiful, professionally-developed designs to choose for your gathering. This is the perfect opportunity to utilize the creative side of your brain in the initial phase of creating an experience for your guests.

Digital vs. Printed
Digital invitations are quick and easy to send out, and they offer a great way to keep track of RSVPs. Printed invitations, on the other hand, add a personal touch and can be a lovely keepsake for your guests.
Designing the Invite
Incorporate elements of your dinner party theme into the design of your invitations. Use creative ideas such as including a small vial of olive oil or a sprig of fresh basil with your printed invitations for a unique touch. We elected to choose a font that best fit the theme we were going for. Further, the colors we utilized were warm and inviting.
Since each of our gatherings would be unique, we elected for a simple theme that did not provide too much in terms of describing the types of gatherings we would be holding. It was elegant, simple and informative.

Designing an Impressive Menu
Planning the food each month was one of the most difficult aspects of the experience. We set a monthly budget of $200 per gathering. This allowed us to get creative on the types of foods we would offer, but gave us plenty of room to provide a food experience that we desired.
We started by selecting the food demographic for each month.
- January – Mexican
- February – Barbecue
- March – Italian
- April – Seafood
- May – Mom’s Favorites (In light of Mother’s Day)
- June – Meat and Potatoes (In light of Father’s Day)
Once we determined the demographics for each month, we got to work seeking recipes for 5 different courses.
Choosing Your 5 Courses
The centerpiece of any dinner party is the food. Carefully planning your dinner party menu ideas will ensure a variety of flavors and textures, making the evening memorable. For this experience, we wanted to offer a welcome drink, starter dish, appetizer, main course and dessert.
This works perfectly to ensure that everyone has enough food throughout the night, but not too much that leaves them stuffed prior to the main course and dessert.
Themed Menu Ideas
Selecting a theme for your menu can simplify your planning and add cohesion to the evening. Some popular themes include Mediterranean, Italian, French, or even specific themes like a Victorian era supper club.

Balancing Flavors
A well-balanced menu should include a mix of flavors and textures. The first step is selecting a welcome drink that aligns with your theme. Then, start with a light appetizer, followed by a hearty soup, a refreshing salad, a rich main course, and a delicate dessert. For example, you could start with a charcuterie board, followed by a creamy tomato soup, a simple salad with lemon zest dressing, a slow cooker roast chicken, and finish with homemade ice cream.
Here is what we elected for the initial month of January. You can find all of meal creations here!
Welcome Drink – Non-alcohol beer and wine. We prefer Athletic Brewing as our non-alcoholic beer of choice.
Starter Dish – Chips and Salsa, Guacamole and Queso
Appetizer – Jalapeno Poppers wrapped with Bacon
Main Course – Homemade Mexican Casserole with beans and rice
Dessert – Mexican Cheesecake
Perfect Drink Pairings
Pairing the right drinks with each course can elevate your dinner party to new heights. Consider the flavors of each dish and choose wines that complement them.
If you’re going with a Mexican theme, considers homemade Margaritas or Mexican beer. For an Italian theme, a nice Italian wine would be perfect! Whatever theme you have decided on should dictate the drink offerings you will be providing.
Pairing Basics
For appetizers and salads, light and crisp wines like Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay work well. Richer dishes such as roast chicken or a vegetarian main like white beans with feta cheese pair beautifully with fuller-bodied wines like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.
In terms of beer, there are only so many beers that pair well with an elegant dinner. Electing Craft IPA’s or foreign beers such as Modelo are the perfect selections for a Mexican theme.
Expert Tips
Don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations from your local wine and beer shop. Many stores offer tastings and can help you select wines that will pair perfectly with your menu items.

Addressing Dietary Needs
Ensuring all your guests can enjoy the meal is crucial. Ask about dietary restrictions when you send out invitations and plan accordingly. This was one of the most crucial questions we asked prior to selecting our menu. As it turned out, one of the participants had a gluten allergy we had to be aware of. Further, others had dietary restrictions (like myself) that forced us to use organic, healthy ingredients to craft each dish.
Asking Guests
Include a note in your invitation asking guests to inform you of any dietary restrictions or preferences. This allows you to prepare suitable alternatives without compromising the overall menu.
Offering Alternatives
Prepare a few versatile dishes that can be easily adjusted for dietary needs. For example, a simple salad can be made vegan by omitting cheese, and a dish like chicken pot pie can have a vegetarian version using white beans and vegetables.
The best solution for this is to offer a la carte options. Don’t mix everything together. Create a “family-style” arrangement that allows each guest to eat what they choose. It’s also much easier on the prep side of things as well. Just make sure you have plenty of dishes to go around!
Preparing Your Home for Guests
Setting the Dining Area
Creating a welcoming and elegant dining area sets the stage for a memorable evening. In order to craft a memorable experience, the details matter. From the lighting to the scent, everything matters. We left no stone unturned in turning our dining room into a five-star restaurant.
We purchased scents that went with the theme of the night. Not too overwhelming, but strong enough to exude a sense of calm and peace throughout the evening. We then purchased some electronic candles to set the mood were we attempting to achieve. Further, we wrapped the centerpiece of the table in burlap to provide a beautiful center piece for the table.
The table was wiped down multiple times ensuring not a crumb was left. Each chair was vacuumed and scrubbed for stains. The floors were spic and span. The walls were wiped. Our baby grand piano was positioned just perfectly for the room. Our drapes were open allowing for natural light to enter. We had soft, dinner music playing ever so slightly as not to interrupt the conversation, but to provide an ambience of peace and conversation.
The dining room is the first impression for your guests. Make it memorable!

Table Setting Tips
Use fresh flowers, fairy lights, and high-quality tableware to set a stunning dinner table. Paying attention to details like napkin folding and placement of utensils can add an extra touch of elegance.
We purchased brand new black tableware with white, cloth napkins to provide that “first-class” feel. Our crystal water pitchers were perfectly placed on the table ready to go. Every table setting was aligned perfectly to the chair of each person.
Here is everything we purchased.
- Utopia Kitchen White Cloth Napkins
- 36-Piece Plastic Wheat Straw Dinnerware Sets Plates and Bowls
- Homemory White Clear Flameless Candles with Remote
- PYRMONT 6 Pack Plastic Plates Reusable 9-Inch Wheat Straw Plates
Decorating Ideas
Choose decorations that enhance your theme. For a summer dinner party, use citrus slices as part of your centerpiece and big pitchers of cold drinks to keep guests refreshed.
Creating the Right Atmosphere
The atmosphere can make or break a dinner party. Focus on lighting, music, and overall ambiance. Utilizing our Amazon Echo, we hid away the speaker for the evening. However, the sound emanating from the device carried through the room throughout the duration of the evening. We elected a playlist that was at least 3 hours long so we would not have to mess with it during the evening.
Lighting Tips
Soft, warm lighting creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Use candles, fairy lights, or dimmable overhead lights to achieve the perfect glow.
Curating a Playlist
Select music that complements the mood of your dinner party. Create a playlist that transitions from soft background music during the meal to more lively tunes as the evening progresses. Now, in most circumstances, I would select every single song that is played for the night. However, for this gathering, I determined no one would be listening to the words. We simply wanted to create the ambience, not distract from the evening’s conversations. For this reason, we just selected a Spotify playlist that focused on acoustic, folksy music.
Organizing Your Kitchen
A well-organized kitchen ensures that preparation and serving go smoothly. In order to ensure you have a proper setup to cook or prepare 5 courses, you have to start early. Our dinner parties start at 6:00p. In order to ensure everything is ready to go, we had to start preparations at 2:00p. Four hours may seem like a lot of time, but when you have 5 courses to prepare, a house to clean and 4 kids running around, you need all the time you can get.

So, we ensured in the week leading up to the gathering that all of our cooking tools and utensils were clean and stored away properly for easy access.
Prepping Space
Clear your counters and organize all necessary tools and ingredients before guests arrive. This makes the cooking process more efficient and enjoyable.
Essential Tools
Ensure you have all the tools you need for your recipes. Items like a slow cooker, sheet pan, and high-quality knives can make a big difference in your cooking experience. Having all of the necessary cooking supplies is essential. We routinely utilize all four burners of our stove at the same. The oven is typically utilized for about an hour throughout the afternoon/evening. Multiple mixing bowls and dishes are routine.
Now, you don’t have to go out and buy a bunch of new stuff. If you can organize your cooking schedule ahead of time and follow that plan, you should be able to get by with what you have on hand. If you do need to purchase something, it can be cheap and sturdy!
Cooking and Timing the Meal
Preparing in Advance
Advance preparation is key to a stress-free dinner party. Choose dishes that can be partially or fully prepared ahead of time. Our routine has always been to pre-purchase all of our food on Friday afternoon. We utilize grocery delivery or pick up to save as much time as we can. By purchasing your food online, you can ensure you are meeting your budgets and schedules for the evening.

Prep-Ahead Tips
Soups, sauces, and desserts are often great to prepare in advance. For example, tomato sauce for a main dish or cookies settings for a simple dessert can be made a day or two before. Or, you can purchase pre-made dishes that just require refrigeration or simple heating to prepare. This is essential to ensuring you meet your timelines. However, if you do want to prepare everything by hand, just make sure you have spaced out your meals enough to get everything done in time for arrival.
I do prefer to cook everything the afternoon of the gathering to ensure the highest level of freshness possible. However, if you do have to heat a dish after it’s prepared, it will still taste the same, and no one will ever know!
Freezing and Storing
Some dishes, like a slow cooker roast chicken or a sheet pan of roasted vegetables, can be prepped and stored in the fridge or freezer until the day of the party. Other dishes like steak, sautéed vegetables and dips must be made the day of the gathering to ensure freshness.
Timing Each Course
Timing is everything when serving a multi-course meal. Create a detailed timeline to ensure everything runs smoothly. I would spend about 30 minutes each month writing down a specific schedule of when to start cleaning, cooking, and serving. While I don’t like having my cell phone with me on nights like this, it was imperative to ensure we kept up with the timelines.
Cooking Schedule
Draft a cooking schedule that outlines when to start each dish, when to serve each course, and when to take breaks for mingling. This helps keep you on track and ensures no dish is overcooked or underprepared.
We never utilized any additional people to craft our gatherings. For this reason, adhering to a tight schedule was imperative. In my notes, I would have the specific time each course was to be served as well as specific times each course was to be re-heated or cooked altogether.
After all, when your main course isn’t being served until 7:45p, you have to be sure there is plenty of time to cook or re-heat.
Serving Tips
Pro Tip: Hire a niece or have one of your kids help you serve.
Serve each course at a leisurely pace, allowing guests time to enjoy their food and conversation. Keep portions moderate to ensure everyone has room for all five courses. A rule of thumb is to offer a new course every 30 minutes.
Welcome Drink: 6:15p
Starter Dish: 6:45p
Appetizer: 7:15p
Main Course: 7:45p
Dessert: 8:15p
Presentation Matters
Presentation can elevate a good meal to a great one. Focus on plating and garnishing each dish beautifully. Since we are serving five courses, your plates should not be full of food. Eating slowly and a little bit at a time throughout the night is the key.

Here are some quick tips to ensure your food presentation is top notch:
1. Use White Plates:
– White plates provide a clean, simple backdrop that makes the colors of the food stand out.
2. Garnish Thoughtfully:
– Use fresh herbs, edible flowers, or microgreens for a touch of color and elegance. Make sure garnishes are edible and complement the dish.
3. Focus on Plating:
– Use the rule of thirds: mentally divide the plate into thirds and place the main protein slightly off-center. Fill one-third with the main item and use the other two-thirds for sides and garnishes.
4. Create Height:
– Add dimension by stacking or layering components of the dish. This creates visual interest and sophistication.
5. Play with Textures:
– Combine different textures (crunchy, creamy, smooth) to make the dish more appealing and dynamic.
6. Sauce Artfully:
– Use a squeeze bottle or spoon to drizzle sauces in a decorative manner. Less is more; avoid drowning the dish in sauce.
7. Keep It Clean:
– Wipe the edges of the plates before serving to keep them clean and neat.
8. Symmetry and Balance:
– Aim for symmetry in plating, but also allow for some asymmetrical elements to keep it visually interesting.
9. Portion Control:
– Ensure portions are not too large. Smaller, well-presented portions often look more elegant and allow guests to savor each bite.
10. Add Color:
– Incorporate a variety of colors to make the dish visually appealing. Use vibrant vegetables, fruits, and herbs.
Hosting with Style and Grace
Welcoming Guests Warmly
How often do you remember the first impression walking into someone’s home? I may be weird, but I remember a bunch. First impressions set the tone for the evening. Greet your guests with a warm smile and a refreshing drink. Ensure your entryway is clean and inviting. Offer to take coats and guide guests to the dining area or cocktail hour space.
Guests won’t always remember what you served or the conversation they had, but they will always remember the way you made them feel. This is paramount to setting the tone for the evening. If the first impression is a dirty house with unclean windows and a thrown together dining room table, you’ll have a hole to dig out of.

However, if you ensure that the first impression is a scent that is inviting, lighting that immediately puts them at ease, and a house that is sparking, your guests will immediately drop their guard and realize that they are in a safe, comfortable home to be authentic.
Managing the Evening
As the night goes on, problems will inevitably arise. Stay calm and composed throughout the evening, even if things don’t go exactly as planned. Take deep breaths and remind yourself that the goal is to have a good time. If something goes wrong, address it calmly and move on.
One thing that we learned rather quickly was that our guests simply did not know when things were going wrong.
For example, we ran out of food during the main course of one of our dishes. I was able to plate 9 dishes, but simply did not have enough food for the final plate. So, I took the food from the plate I had prepared for myself and substituted with leftover food from the starter plate and appetizer. Not a single person noticed as they were deep into a conversation.
Handling Issues
Have backup plans for common issues, such as running out of food or dealing with a dish that didn’t turn out as expected. Simple solutions like having extra finger foods or an easy dinner party recipe on hand can save the day.
We always bought food for 12 people (except the one time we apparently bought for 9). This ensures that you always have enough for every guest. Plus, in the event there is leftover food, you’ll have one heck of a Sunday lunch!
Some of the other issues that occurred throughout the evening were a little less common and foreseen.
For example, one of our overhead can lights started flickering relentlessly. So, we just rolled in another lamp, stuck it in the corner and all was good!
In another example, I forgot to pre-heat the oven for the main course, so we were behind by 10 minutes leading into the appetizer. We simply asked a follow-up question that guided the conversation for an additional 10 minutes or so leaving enough time to get the main dish out (albeit behind schedule) without anyone noticing.
Just get creative when problems happen.
Asking The Right Questions
Undoubtedly, the star of the evening is always the conversations you have. You never really know what to expect when you ask a question, so just go with the flow. However, the questions you ask will set the tone for the the conversations that follow.
When I first concocted the idea for Curated Conversations, I just wanted to talk about things that were important to us and get other people’s feedback. So, when we began crafting the questions to be asked, we simply asked ourselves what other people would be interested in talking about. Topics ranged from career to kids to dreams to adventures to travel and everything in between.

How To Come Up With Your Questions
Coming up with your questions is almost as fun as asking them. It’s pretty simple really. Here are some of the questions we asked ourselves when planning the right questions to ask for each course:
- What is on my heart right now?
- What am I most curious about?
- What’s something that is frustrating me?
- What are our passions in life?
- What can’t we agree on?
Starting here is often the best way to come up with creative questions. The first gathering we had was pretty easy. The theme for the night was “Dreams & Adventure”. So, all of our questions were geared towards those two words.
- What is your biggest dream you haven’t yet pursued?
- What is the greatest adventure you’ve ever been a part of?
- If you needed one thing to pursue your dream, what would it be? (We then followed this question by requesting that someone find a way to help)
- What scares you the most about your own ambitions?
- What is one thing you will do next month to get closer to your dream?
These were the exact questions we asked. We dialogued for more than 3 hours on these 5 questions. It was truly remarkable to sit and listen to the dreams everyone had. Not only was it extremely enlightening, but we were inspired to further pursue our dreams because of the words that were spoken over us.
Here are 30 questions you can utilize to create 6 months worth of Curated Conversation dinners!
